സമചതുരത്തിന്റെ വികർണങ്ങളിലുള്ള സംഖ്യകളുടെ തുക 4 ഉം 6 ഉം ആണല്ലോ. നാലു സംഖ്യകളും തുല്യമാകുമ്പോൾ വികർണങ്ങളുടെ തുക സമമാകണം.. പരസ്പരം അടുത്തിരിക്കുന്ന രണ്ടു സംഖ്യകൾ എടുത്താൽ, ഇവാ രണ്ടു വ്യത്യസ്ത വികർണങ്ങളില്ലായിരിക്കും. ഈ രണ്ടു സംഖ്യകളുടെ കൂടെ ഒന്ന് കൂട്ടുമ്പോൾ രണ്ടു വികർണങ്ങളുടെയും തുക ഒന്നുവീതം കൂടും . ഇവ തമ്മിലുള്ള വ്യത്യാസം എപ്പോഴും 2 ആയിരിക്കും. എത്ര നീക്കങ്ങൾ കഴിഞ്ഞാലും ഈ വ്യത്യാസം മാറാതെ നില്ക്കും (ഈ വ്യത്യാസം ഒരു അചരം ആണ്) . അതുകൊണ്ടു 4 സംഖ്യകളെയും തുല്യമാക്കാൻ പറ്റില്ല.
